President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled Power Force, a new national initiative aimed at training 5,000 young Nigerians to support the nationwide rollout of smart electricity meters, while creating jobs and strengthening reforms in Nigeria's power sector.
The programme, to be implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, is designed to address the shortage of skilled meter installers and technicians across the country.
According to the Presidency, the initiative is expected to:
Train and certify 5,000 young Nigerians in smart meter installation.
Accelerate the nationwide deployment of electricity meters.
Reduce estimated billing for electricity consumers.
Improve transparency in electricity billing.
Strengthen revenue collection and service delivery within the power sector.
Create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for participants.
The first phase of the programme will begin in Abuja in July 2026, before expanding to all six geopolitical zones. Participants will receive technical training from the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), while certification will be overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA). Successful trainees will be linked to jobs with electricity distribution companies, meter providers, and other industry partners.
President Tinubu said the initiative aligns with his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that youth employment remains a priority.
Applications for the first cohort are scheduled to open on 4 July 2026 and will remain open for two weeks through the Presidential Metering Initiative portal.
